“I’m tired,” she said, rubbing her temples with an open hand. Let’s take a look at what this would look like on a page: This is a more specific use, but one that can be very effective if you’re trying to convey abrupt interruptions to the words somebody is saying. If you’re writing any kind of dialogue, an em dash can also be used to indicate breaks in the speech of a character. There has been a lot of ink spilled about which one is better to use, but an em dash is a great way of making a point at the end of a sentence, or expanding on your writing with a separate-but related-phrase. In this scenario, an em dash is similar to a semicolon, only it’s a more definitive break. Notice here how we only use one em dash, but it almost accomplishes the same as using two. ‘The amount you can do with em dashes is impressive-they are some of the most versatile punctuation you can use.’ Secondly, let’s see how an em dash can be used to end a sentence. It’s stronger than a pair of commas but flows more than parentheses. In this example, an em dash is a great way of properly sectioning off a part of the sentence that you want to carry more weight. Note how the em dash here functions similarly to how you would use either parenthesis or a pair of commas. ‘I love using em dashes-even if I don’t love studying grammar and punctuation-because you can do so much with them.’ We’ll give you some concrete examples below.įirst, let’s see how it can be used in a pair. The first is in pairs-doing this right here can help you to segment a side piece of information-or they can be used to break a sentence into a separate section nearer the end. They are usually used in two different ways. One of the big difficulties when it comes to understanding what an em dash is used for is the fact that it is a uniquely versatile piece of punctuation.Īt a fundamental level, an Em dash is used to create a strong break in the structure of a sentence. An em dash is a longer kind of dash that can be used within both American and standard versions of English. Okay, so let’s start at the very beginning by defining exactly what an em dash is. When to use them, some of the rules involved with them, and how you can find a shortcut on your word processor. In this article, we’re going to be taking you through everything there is to know about em dashes. How can you be sure to use an em Dash correctly? Where is the shortcut on a keyboard to place in your document? How necessary is it to use em Dashes in the first place? If you’re wondering about these questions then you don’t need to panic-you’ve come to the right place! But we know how difficult grammar rules can be to learn, especially when so many people use them differently. Perhaps you’re familiar with the name, but you don’t understand the grammar rules or the situations where you’d use it in a piece of writing.Įither way, it can be an important tool in a writer’s toolbox and something that is important to know. If you’ve ever read modern fiction before, especially pieces written by an American author, you’ve probably noticed this ‘-’ symbol before.Ī lot of people would mistake it for a hyphen, or a dash, but it’s actually a special kind of punctuation character that is separate from the others known as the em Dash.

īuhring was the only woman to participate in the inaugural Transcontinental Race from London to Istanbul in 2013, finishing in 9th place overall. In December 2012, she set the first Guinness World Record as the fastest woman to circumnavigate the globe by bike, riding over 29,000 kilometres (18,000 mi) in a total time of 152 days (144 actual days in the saddle). They’ve won people’s hearts by being strong but, above all, by not being the focus of any doubt.Juliana Buhring (born 2 June 1981) is a British-German ultra-endurance cyclist and writer. “Kittel, Greipel, Degenkolb, and Tony Martin are very popular athletes in Germany. “In recent years, German riders have shone on the Tour’s roads,” Mustroph says. The transmission of knowledge was a core principle in all of the clubs within a country that was more inspired by cycling and the famous Peace Race than it was by European football. Greipel was a typical product of East German cycling during a period when young people benefited from the experience of veterans. There he learned his trade from Jens Heppner and Enrico Poitschke, now sport director at Bora-Hansgrohe. The “Rostock Gorilla” began his career with Team Wiesenhof, another team from the East. The oldest of all the current German riders, he will celebrate his 35th birthday on July 16. The best example of East German tradition in the contemporary peloton is Greipel. “His position could have been filled by any one of the dozens of racers who emerged in the East before him.” “With his six consecutive green jerseys won between 1996 to 2001 and his 12 stage victories, Erik Zabel is obviously an example,” Mustroph says. Countless others before him, and even many of his contemporaries, could only dream of doing so. He was only able to turn professional and experience the Tour de France at the end of his career. Olaf Ludwig, for example, was a great sprinter and winner of the green jersey in 1990. Their stories remind us of the excellence of East German riders, who were confined behind a wall, and to an amateur career, for 40 years. Erik Zabel, six times the Tour’s green jersey winner, hails from East Berlin. While Kittel hails from Arnstadt, in what was once East Germany, Degenkolb comes from the neighboring town of Gera and Greipel is from Rostock. “They learn about cycling by racing on the flats and winning sprints, not by climbing hills.” “German cyclists start young in races that are quite easy,” Mustroph says. He won the European under-23 title in 2009 and finished third at the world championship in the same category in 2010. Now 29 and with nine Tour stage wins to his credit, the rider who has become almost unbeatable when he’s on form initially gained renown as a time trialist. That description fits well with the career trajectory of Kittel. “They’ve very much got the build for sprinting, even though most youngsters are brought through to be time trial specialists.” “They could be described as a spontaneous generation,” says Tom Mustroph, a journalist at Neues Deutschland. Today, however, Germany is better known for its sprinting prowess. Traditionally they’ve shone in time trials, as exemplified by four-time world TT champion Tony Martin and previously by Dietrich Thurau and Jan Ullrich. If we add in John Degenkolb, who has yet to win at the Tour but has claimed victory in five major classics, including Milano-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix in 2015, German riders are back to a place at the front of the peloton. Along with Tony Martin (five stage victories) and André Greipel (11 stage victories), Kittel is a symbol of German cycling at its peak. He was proud to see the work of this new generation had been rewarded. When Tour organizer ASO announced that the Tour would be heading to Düsseldorf, Marcel Kittel immediately spoke up. The duo plays a romantic cat-and-mouse game à la “ Mr. Keaton nearly steals the film in a role that makes him look two decades younger. Q looks like she hasn’t skipped a beat in the role of a leading action star and is far more credible in the role than others who have tried to fill those shoes. Screenwriter Richard Wenk, who has wrote “The Equalizer,” gives “The Protégé” a well-crafted story of revenge, love and tragedy carried by the incredible chemistry of Keaton and Maggie Q. The script is far smarter than a misguided revenge flick. Under the direction of Martin Campbell, a man who is also overqualified in being at the helm of action films, you have a film that sets a new standard in the femme fatale genre. Maggie spent four seasons playing the role of femme fatale in the hit CW show, “ Nikita.” Needless to say, Maggie is underrated and overqualified for the job of leading action lady. The same can’t be said for “The Protégé” due to the X factor known as Maggie Q. Some films, such as “ Atomic Blonde,” have the cinematic style to stand out in a saturated market, but most films, like “ Ava,” go the route of a borderline cartoon. Over the last few years, a slew of female-assassin films have been dumped into theaters attempting to gender-swap the genre following the #MeToo movement. The most efficient way is to use a combination of not and str.isspace() method because the strip() method has to remove the whitespaces, and it’s a costly operation when compared to the issapce() method. # Check if the string is empty or not using not operator and strip() method In the below example, the strip() method returns true if it encounters whitespaces, thus solving the issue. In the above method, the strings with whitespaces are considered non-empty strings, and we can overcome this issue by using the strip() method, which truncates the whitespaces at both leading and trailing ends. If the values compared are not equal, then a value of false is. If the values compared are equal, then a value of true is returned. It returns either true or false depending on the result of the operation. String is not empty Using not+str.strip() method The not equal operator is a relational or comparison operator that compares two or more values (operands). The not operator can also perform similar to len() method and check if the length of the string is 0 or not internally.Īgain, the not operator considers the whitespaces a non-empty string similar to the len() method, which is invalid.Įxample – Check if the string is empty or not using not operator # Check if the string is empty or not using not operator # Check if the string is empty or not using len() method In the below example, we determine if the string is empty or not by checking if the length of the string is equal to 0 using the “if” statement. The string with empty spaces is actually an empty string, but the len() method treats whitespaces as Unicode characters and returns the length of the string. Check if the strA is empty : The string is. strA ''print ('Check if the strA is empty : ', end'') print ('The string is empty') print ('No it is not empty') Output. The not operator in Python checks the string with just spaces to be non-empty, which should not practically be True. Otherwise, it’s not empty.Įxample – Check if the string is empty or not using the len() method. Method 1: Checking empty string using not operator. If the len() method returns 0, it means the string is empty. We can use this technique to determine if the string is empty or not. The len() method is a built-in function in Python that returns the length of a string.
Its victory may coincide with the destruction of humanity wherever it has ruled, it has begun to destroy the essence of man. The totalitarian attempt at global conquest and total domination has been the destructive way out of all impasses. Or, the irritating incompatibility between the actual power of modern man (greater than ever before, great to the point where he might challenge the very existence of his own universe) and the impotence of modern men to live in, and understand the sense of, a world which their own strength has established. Or, the curious contradiction between the totalitarian movements’ avowed cynical ‘realism’ and their conspicuous disdain of the whole texture of reality. Or, the grotesque disparity between cause and effect which introduced the era of imperialism, when economic difficulties led, in a few decades, to a profound transformation of political conditions all over the world. In this sense, it must be possible to face and understand the outrageous fact that so small (and, in world politics, so unimportant) a phenomenon as the Jewish question and antisemitism could become the catalytic agent for first, the Nazi movement, then a world war, and finally the establishment of death factories. Comprehension, in short, means the unpremeditated, attentive facing up to, and resisting of, reality – whatever it may be. It means, rather, examining and bearing consciously the burden which our century has placed on us – neither denying its existence nor submitting meekly to its weight. Comprehension does not mean denying the outrageous, deducing the unprecedented from precedents, or explaining phenomena by such analogies and generalities that the impact of reality and the shock of experience are no longer felt. The conviction that everything that happens on earth must be comprehensible to man can lead to interpreting history by commonplaces. To yield to the mere process of disintegration has become an irresistible temptation, not only because it has assumed the spurious grandeur of ‘historical necessity’, but also because everything outside it has begun to appear lifeless, bloodless, meaningless, and unreal. It was written out of the conviction that it should be possible to discover the hidden mechanics by which all traditional elements of our political and spiritual world were dissolved into a conglomeration where everything seems to have lost specific value, and has become unrecognizable for human comprehension, unusable for human purpose. It holds that Progress and Doom are two sides of the same medal that both are articles of superstition, not of faith. This book has been written against a background of both reckless optimism and reckless despair. The central events of our time are not less effectively forgotten by those committed to a belief in an unavoidable doom, than by those who have given themselves up to reckless optimism. Desperate hope and desperate fear often seem closer to the center of such events than balanced judgment and measured insight. Although it may seem better preserved in some parts of the world than in others, it can nowhere provide the guidance to the possibilities of the century, or an adequate response to its horrors. On the level of historical insight and political thought there prevails an ill-defined, general agreement that the essential structure of all civilizations is at the breaking point. It is as though mankind had divided itself between those who believe in human omnipotence (who think that everything is possible if one knows how to organize masses for it) and those for whom powerlessness has become the major experience of their lives. Never has our future been more unpredictable, never have we depended so much on political forces that cannot be trusted to follow the rules of common sense and self-interest – forces that look like sheer insanity, if judged by the standards of other centuries. Under the most diverse conditions and disparate circumstances, we watch the development of the same phenomena – homelessness on an unprecedented scale, rootlessness to an unprecedented depth. We no longer hope for an eventual restoration of the old world order with all its traditions, or for the reintegration of the masses of five continents who have been thrown into a chaos produced by the violence of wars and revolutions and the growing decay of all that has still been spared. This moment of anticipation is like the calm that settles after all hopes have died. Two world wars in one generation, separated by an uninterrupted chain of local wars and revolutions, followed by no peace treaty for the vanquished and no respite for the victor, have ended in the anticipation of a third World War between the two remaining world powers. There are 2 things that make the bangpae-yeon unique: Similar to the Japanese Rokkaku, it is shaped like a shield and is bowed. The traditional Korean fighter kite (above)is a rectangular kite known as the bangpae-yeon. Image courtesy of & All About Korean Kite Fighter kites were originally made from colourful paper and bamboo while the traditionalists swear by these materials and continue to use traditional designs, carbon fiber and Orcon film kites are increasing in popularity. The single line makes the kite more reliant on the pilot’s skill with line tension to control it to dodge and cut other kite lines. Fighter kites are almost exclusively single-line kites that are flat in design. There are also manufacturers who specialize in this type of kite line, such is its popularity especially in India and Pakistan. The line is painted with glue and then coated with crushed glass. As previously mentioned, such kite lines are usually made from abrasive materials, or they are coated with abrasives. The most prominent feature of a fighter kite is its kite line. However, there are a few features that are identical or similar across the various designs: What Does A Fighter Kite Look Like?Įvery country has its own variation of the design for a fighter kite. In the Caribbean, sharp objects such as blades or shards of glass are attached to their kite tails rather than using glass-coated or abrasive kite lines. Kite fighting is popular in countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Afghanistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Chile, Brazil, and some islands in the Caribbean. More recently, kite flying has become a popular activity on India’s Independent Day. Kite flying takes place mainly during specific festivals such as the spring festival known as Basant (or Bassant in Pakistan). In pull cutting, when lines are in contact, the kite flier or pilot quickly pulls the line in towards themself to produce a sawing motion to cut through their opponent’s kite line.Īlthough kites themselves were invented 2,500 years ago in China, the sport of kite fighting is said to have first appeared in India. In release cutting, once lines are in contact, parties will let out their lines until one is cut. There are 2 common ways of ‘cutting’ another kite line with your own – release cutting or pull cutting: In the United States, competitions are very different from these variations above competitors will instead compete through a display of skills and “line touch” contests. In Japan and Thailand, the objective of kite fighting is to knock your opponent’s kite down to the ground rather than to cut their kite line. If the cut kite is not ‘captured’, the kite belongs to no one, and “kite runners” – usually young children – will pursue the kite to claim it as theirs. In other regions, kite fighters cut their opponent’s kite line, then capture the trailing line of the cut kite with their own kite line and secure their prize – the opponent’s kite. Using kite line that is abrasive, or coated in abrasive material (like crushed glass), competitors try to cut down their opponents’ kite lines and bring the kite to the ground. Generally, 2 or more kites are flown in the competition. The objective(s) of kite fighting varies from region to region. It is an exciting sport to both participate in and spectate, but can also be dangerous.
